Gareth Pugh Fall 2008

Gareth Pugh might look like a talented designer to many people, but seriously to me his collections are scary, the guy seems young and nice, but I wonder what goes through his mind when he designs?

And the shoes, well you tell me!!!!

Gareth Pugh's designs are never for the faint hearted (obviously ;)). So far he has managed to stay afloat by selling a very limited amount of clothing from each collection for high sums of money. In London our club scene has kind of, I guess the best word would be, mutated. It's the east end where you will see these pieces on people who you have to admire for there guts to wear them. Whilst his designs are totally uncomercial and incredibly difficult to wear, you have to admire the guy for sticking to his guns. And often during LFW it's his show that is the most packed where even editors sit on the floor. those shoes to you and me are horrifying on the average person, but down the streets of Hoxton they have a dystopian futuristic vibe about them and there is quite a large amount of women (surprisingly large) who love out of this world foot wear. the main difference between LFW and all the others is that everything is totally different in each show, whereas in NY there is a deffinite similarity between many shows. I could go on, but I have to wake up early and I remember that I don't post good comments when im tired so i'll stop.

I am sure some people wear Gareth Pugh's designs and yes the guys has B to hold on to his style, I love edginess, but what I don't like about these designs is the darkness that you can feel just by looking at the runway show.
Creativity is one thing but it is something disturbing in Gareth's designs.
Anyway the shoes are certainly unwearable and not for everyone.

I think everybody had a 'dark' or goth phase once on their lives and got over it. Gareth just haven't. I'm wondering if he dresses the same way he designs. I always wonder what would be the outcome if I put some chicken wire, a helmet, an old construction boot and some coil wires, now I know, a Gareth Pugh shoe :)

Your site is really a nice one. I like the color pink, very girly! Plus, all the shoes are adorable, fantastic and so sexy. I can't help to fall in love with the shoes...

Is it okay if I'll put you on my blogroll?

Oh my certainly thank you for the compliment, email me your site so we can reciprocate!:)

oh yes his designs are totally dystopian, I wouldn't call it juvenile though nor would i call it gothic, in fact he describes them of being more s&m then anything else. High Fashion is all about fantasy and whats fantasy without its dark side, which Gareth provides in abundance?

Well dark is the right word, as Sarai mentioned earlier these shoes are very much Marilyn Manson..esque. At least the person that will wear Gareth's designs will be getting all the attention.
I agree Fashion is about creative minds and fantasy, and Gareth certainly combines both talents.

I have to say that although these shoes are scary to most on the right person they could be complimentary, im thinking maybe marilyn manson or even herman munster's wife(from The Munsters) LOL

Yes they are very much Marilyn Manson inspired, but somehow I wonder how you can walk in these heeless shoes!!!

you'd walk very carefully!!! lol

I find it very insulting to Gareth for you to throw his designs in with "shock rockers" like Marilyn Manson. I do not see that Gareth is trying to shock anyone but rather test the boundaries of what people consider fashion. I love the more eccentric fashion shows, they are much more entertaining than watching a bunch of beige pantsuits walk down the run way. As for the shoes, I don't see them as unwearable. They could easily be worn by someone that isn't afraid to stand out. Very few people, if they saw someone walking down the street in them, would say "omg, those shoes are awful". They are rather stylish and amazing to tell you the truth. To be able to manipulate the balance of the human body so that a shoe with no heel could be worn is actually quite ingenious. The way I see it, you are all a bunch of haters because you didn't think of it first!

First of all thank you for your comment, I truly appreciate, I want to set the record straight, and if you knew more about my blog you will know that hate is not part of my vocabulary, I don't hate people especially people that I don't know, I have no reason to hate Gareth Pugh,I don't like his style. This is the beauty of fashion everyone has its own opinion and can express it freely.

Let me clarify the use of the term "hater"

Taken from Urbandictionary.com:

"A label applied to people who are more negative than positive when discussing another person. It most commonly refers to individuals whose negativity is so extreme that it is all-consuming. However, there are various levels and forms of being a hater, ranging from completely dismissing any positive traits or actions, to merely painting a less than flattering picture by using words with negative connotations. Hating is often attributed to jealousy, but just as often, it seems to stem from some other source."

The "hate" portion of the word is not meant to be taken literally. I don't think that you actually hate Gareth Pugh.

Oh well, I don't denie the fact that Gareth Pugh is extremely talented, but truth is His runway models remind me of Marylin Manson, maybe the make up the hair I don't know, now I am just expressing my opinion since a blog is an open forun where everyone can express its opinion, and this is why people read blogs because of the freedom of the writer to express its true feelings.

Well the only reason that you associate his models with Marilyn Manson is because he is the only "pop icon" that represents anything on the darker side of creativity. The truth is, Manson has stolen almost all of his "creativity" from other visionaries. The fact that everyone automatically screams "MARILYN MANSON!" when they see something that is dark and alternative really disgusts me. It's like giving Dior credit every time you see a dress... yes, it's that broad. Everyone is entitled to their own opinions and sheltered people have sheltered opinions...

Thank you for your comment, you are right I am probably too old and too sheltered to understand Gareth's fabulous talent.
I like to see life brighter than darker, but this is a matter of choices.

The previous comment is from me...

OK I just have to defend Florence here. Everyone has their own personal taste, and this is Florence's blog. She is still showcasing these designs and creating this discussion. Sure I agree Gareth does creative work, I would also agree these are ugly shoes. Ugly in a good way, they are clearly statements and why must a shoe be beautiful all the time? sure these aren't crocs but they will not appeal to the average shoe lover. I guess this is the shoe equivalent of showing a burka in a blog about bikini's. The point my (rather long-winded) argument is trying to make is that Shoe Goddess is a blog that does show more then just pretty shoes and is unafraid of putting its opinions out there.

Thank you so much for defending me, I just want to add one thing, I might be a little old and sheltered but the one who never accept critics never learn, and I see my blog as an open forum for freedom of expression, and I am glad to give everyone the opportunity to express itself.

Seriously....I don't get how you can think marilyn manson by looking at these? Completely two different sides of the spectrum! Manson is about trash and doing anything to get a response, and Gareth is about high fashion. People automatically think "marilyn manson" just because there's alot of black, which is extrememly ignorant to say the least! Do your research before you pass judgement.

-Giselle

OH well first of all thank you for you commet. I am sorry if my comment offended you,no need to get so testy.
I am not suggesting that the clothes remind me of Marilyn Manson but the darkness of the show (models wearing trash bag over their face) is a little on the dark side inst'it?
I am not denying that Gareth Pugh is certainely a very talented designer, what I am expressing is the feeling I got from the show.

When you get a degree from Central Saint Martins, you can judge.

Well for your record, I might no have a degree from Central Saint Martins, but I have a PHD in Egyptologie from the Louvre in Paris as well as a master in fine art, I am specialized in the 17 French and I talian century, and believe it or not I see a lot of beautiful things, but when I see ugliness I have to mention it it, and your nasty and bitter attitude only encourage me.
By the way what are your credential to juge me?
Cheers.

Why are you all so shocked? On the surface maybe, it does look 'gothic'; and evidently you have a very formulated and stereotypical view of what 'gothic' is, but Gareth Pugh's main aim has always been to distort the human body beyond recognition. His collections are never going to swing towards societies convention because of that, and frankly i think it's exciting to see somebody doing the sort of work for the catwalk. Catwalk fashion is where the designer can go wild with their designs and express themselves. Besides, isn't everyone trying to jump on the whole gothic trend for this autumn winter? At least his is gutsy and unpredictable.

Long Live Gareth Pugh =)

Hi Lauren
Thank you for your comment, since I wrote the article about Gareth Pugh I have received so many comments, there is few designers that are so controvertsial, anyway I have review Gareth spring collection and I liked it.
Cheers.
