Now that we have discussed the importance of a basic black pump and a ballet flat, it’s time to discuss another important facet of building a shoe wardrobe: the evening shoe. I really think it's a good idea to have at least one or two timeless evening shoe options. First of all, if you have an event come up, it's nice to already own a shoe that works with most everything, so you can just focus on buying a dress. In addition, a beautiful evening shoe can transform a plain little black dress into a much dressier outfit. So if you're in a jam with a last-minute event, you can toss on that LBD and gorgeous pair of satin sandals, and you're all set.

In my mind, nothing can ruin a beautiful evening look, like putting on a pair of inappropriate shoes with an evening gown. And when I say inappropriate, I’m thinking of pairing something like a delicate chiffon gown with a a pair of office-appropriate black pumps or a chunky platform sandal. Perfectly wearable in other scenarios, but they just do not work with a gown.

Another issue with evening sandals is comfort. I have ended so many evenings with aching, blistered feet. Granted any 5-inch shoe is going to be somewhat uncomfortable if you’re standing in them all night, but make sure any shoes you pick are somewhat tolerable. For example, if you mainly wear flats, don’t pick evening shoes with 4- to 5-inch heels. A heel of 2 or 3 inches is just fine.

It is impossible to pick a shoe that is going to work with any evening dress you might one day wear, but stick to something as neutral as possible like black, silver or gold. I adore evening shoes in vibrant reds or turquoise, but if you’re just building your shoe wardrobe and want to maximize your shoe investment, go for something neutral that you can get maximum wear out of. Later on you can add in some more unique choices. It is also nice to have a sandal and pump to choose from.

Here are some of my favorite choices availabe online now. I’ve also included some flats for those times when you’re say pregnant or have a sprained ankle (been there, done that).

Though I clearly see these are fabulous, I have a problem with the d'orsay style. I feel like I'm always one step away from stepping out of the shoe. I've owned one pair of d'orsay and never wore them because of said problem.  Regardless of comfort (not sure if I should really be disregarding comfort but oh well!) these are very cutting edge, and I can't deny my obsession with neutral, earthy-toned patent leathers. You could pair these with any dress or skirt (I'm envisioning a cobalt blue mini I just saw at Diavolina here in LA.)

Have you ever loved a pair of shoes so much, that when they were worn out you wished you had bought the same style in every color and material possible?

This should not be an issue when it comes to Christian Louboutin's shoe collection. They usually come in a wide range of materials and colors, like these Armadillo pumps that we have seen in black leather, pewter, red satin and now in blue satin.

I am not sure what to think about these shoes! Something inside of me wants to scream in horror!  The green pom-pom looks like a discarded cabbage fallen from a delivery truck in the middle of nowhere!

"I feel pretty, oh so pretty. I feel pretty and witty and bright, and I pity any girl who doesn't have these shoes!!!!" lalalala... Remember West Side Story  the movie?

Seriously, aren't these shoes fabulous??!! I want them so badly! Oh well, my B-day is right around the corner, thank god. The red pleated satin upper adds a very retro feel to these super hot pumps.

These Miu Miu jeweled pumps are fairy tale princess slippers with a twist! First of all, the colors are stunning. I love the metallic leather, and the combination of colors really makes the shoe much more interesting without being tacky or too much. But the pièce de résistance is definitely the jeweled heel, a combination of pink, purple, peach and clear stones. It is amazing!! These shoes deserve to be the center of attention, so I would wear them with a plain dress in black, cream or even pink.

Absolutely Gorgeous. It's rare these days that a shoe can be so different and "out there" without being ugly, but I have to say these d'orsay pumps fit the bill.  Pink and nude are beautiful together (who knew?) and I'm loving the thick tassels.  I would do these with a floral fitted dress or even a really beautiful royal blue.

How chic! Love the almost art deco feel of these d'orsay pumps.  The black and metallic bronze blend so nicely together.  I could see these for work with a beautiful black suit or for play with a forties style black dress (I have the perfect one from Nanette Lepore... I might need these shoes...)

These are delightful. The purple and the pointed toe make these suede pumps that much more special. I would love to see them with  a little cocktail dress (black or grey)  Keep your eye out for more fun styles by designer, Jenni Kayne.

Miu Miu has always been my favorite line and this season is no exception. These pumps look like they came straight from the art deco movement of the early 20th century. Art deco mixes old with new, geometric modern shapes with primitive forms. The colors here are simplistic yet tasteful and versatile. I would pair these pumps with a simple black dress (ugh I have the perfect one, very 40's with three quarter length sleeves and a thin waist belt.) Hmmm, I may have to make a shopping trip...
